What Is Synovial Sarcoma?

Jake Jollymore

A Synovial Sarcoma is a rare form of cancer which occurs primarily in the extremities of the arms or legs, often in proximity to joint capsules and tendon sheaths. It is a type of soft-tissue sarcoma. Now, if you are like me, you’re going to need a minor breakdown on what this all means in relation to the body. I’m going to break it down specifically for my body.

As I previously said in another blog post, my softball sized tumor was found in my armpit. The sarcoma was attached to my bicep, triceps, and shoulder blade  on my right side of my body. From my understanding, the tumor had tentacles wrapping around everything in that general area.

There is really only one symptom of this type of cancer. That symptom is the swelling or the tumor becoming visible as it grows. This checks out as I literally had no idea it was there.

This specific type of cancer is so rare that it only occurs in 1-2 people per every 1,000,000 people each year. It also more commonly occurs in the persons 30’s. It is also found in males over females on a 2:1 ratio.
